Theo of Golden

Theo of Golden beautifully captures the touching journey of 86-year-old Theo, who moves to the quaint town of Golden, Georgia, to attend to personal matters. As he wanders through the town, he discovers a local coffee shop adorned with over ninety portraits painted by a local artist. Enchanted by the faces and the stories they seem to whisper, Theo begins purchasing the portraits—one by one—and personally gifting them to the individuals depicted. In each heartfelt encounter, he shares why the portrait resonated with him and what he perceives in the person, offering them a moment of recognition, dignity, and connection. Through these gentle exchanges, the novel delves into themes of community, generosity, and the profound impact of truly seeing and valuing others.

I find myself returning to this story of a man who, even in the twilight years of his life, seeks to truly see people and care for them. I aspire to be like Theo. I wish to see people, regardless of their age or life circumstances, and form friendships with them. In doing so, I hope to discover ways to bless them through thoughtful acts of kindness, radical generosity, and simply by harnessing the power of attention.

With my blog, Thea of Bend, I aim to gather stories of intentional kindness and thoughtfulness. Perhaps they will be my own stories, or perhaps they will be ones I have the privilege of witnessing. Either way, in a world increasingly marked by hostility and a general lack of hospitality, I wish to capture moments that reflect the Kingdom of Heaven.
